Background of the Study
Patient-centered care (PCC) has become a cornerstone of modern healthcare, emphasizing the importance of respecting patients' preferences, needs, and values in the treatment process (Gerteis et al., 2024). In oncology, where patients often face life-altering treatments and terminal diagnoses, patient-centered approaches are particularly crucial. Oncology nurses, who serve as the primary caregivers throughout the cancer treatment journey, are uniquely positioned to provide this form of care. The role of nursing in oncology care extends beyond clinical treatment, encompassing emotional support, educational guidance, and advocacy for the patient's rights and desires in treatment decisions (McClement et al., 2023).
At University of Jos Teaching Hospital, Plateau State, the integration of patient-centered approaches into oncology care is an essential part of the nursing role, aiming to enhance patient satisfaction and improve clinical outcomes. While there is increasing recognition of the need for patient-centered care in oncology, there is limited research on the effectiveness of these approaches at specific institutions such as University of Jos Teaching Hospital. This study seeks to evaluate the implementation of patient-centered nursing approaches and their effectiveness in improving patient experiences and outcomes in oncology care at the hospital.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing emphasis on patient-centered care in oncology, there is limited evidence evaluating the specific outcomes of patient-centered nursing approaches at University of Jos Teaching Hospital. This gap in research hinders a comprehensive understanding of how these approaches impact patients' satisfaction, treatment adherence, and quality of life. This study aims to assess the role of patient-centered care practices in oncology nursing at the hospital and explore their effectiveness in meeting the unique needs of cancer patients.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the effectiveness of patient-centered nursing approaches in oncology care at University of Jos Teaching Hospital.
2. To examine the impact of patient-centered care on patient satisfaction and treatment outcomes in oncology patients.
3. To identify the challenges faced by oncology nurses in implementing patient-centered care approaches.
Research Questions
1. How effective are patient-centered nursing approaches in improving oncology care outcomes at University of Jos Teaching Hospital?
2. What is the impact of patient-centered care on patient satisfaction in oncology patients?
3. What are the challenges faced by oncology nurses in implementing patient-centered care in oncology settings?
Research Hypotheses
1. Patient-centered nursing approaches significantly improve patient satisfaction and treatment outcomes in oncology care.
2. The implementation of patient-centered care leads to better patient adherence to treatment protocols.
3. Oncology nurses face significant challenges in fully integrating patient-centered care in their practice.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on patient-centered nursing approaches in oncology care at University of Jos Teaching Hospital, Plateau State. Limitations include the subjective nature of patient satisfaction assessments and the potential variability in how nurses implement patient-centered care strategies.
